RockMelt is an open source social networking web browser developed by Eric Vishria and Tim Howes based around the popular Google Chrome project, including multiple social networking features like Facebook chat, Twitter alerts and widgetized areas for third party widgets such as Twitter and YouTube. The project is being developed in order to create a social networking site that combines the best of a community site like Facebook with the ability to use the latest and greatest social networking technologies. This technology enables users to create a personal online community where they can meet and interact with others around the world, even if they live in different countries. This type of social networking site can also provide users with tools to help them share news stories and other information with their friends around the globe.
While the RockMelter project has a long way to go before it is ready to be used by the general public, it is already useful enough to be able to send out emails or perform basic web browsing. The interface includes a toolbar that allows users to browse their various social networks and share information across multiple networks in a single place, without having to switch to another browser tab. It also contains a built in "friends and followers" application which lists people who have indicated on their profiles that they are interested in the projects you are working on. Once you've met up with these people, you can contact them by sending a message. This means that it's possible to share information across the web in one place, without leaving the main browser window.
Rockmelon is still under active development, but it is currently available for download for free from its website. However, if you want to try it out right now, you will have to purchase the "Rockmelon Browser" which is compatible with all major browsers and provides full integration into your browser. The good news is that there are many free web browsers available online that will allow you to try out the software before you make any investment.
